What long-term recovery could look like in jack-up sectors

At the start of 2016, industry reports highlighted the downturn in which the offshore industry faced following the significant drop in oil prices. A report by the Bank of Scotland, published in June found that 51% of the 141 UK oil and gas companies surveyed made redundancies in the past year. Combined with the results from the Claxton Decommissioning Industry Questionnaire, which found that 66% of respondents believed the oil price would not make $50 in 2016, and the short-term outlook for the industry was looking bleak at the start of the year.

Despite falling oil prices since 2014 affecting most of the global oil industry, the sector has also seen a flurry of activity where operators look to consolidate their profitable assets, and get rid of the ones that aren’t. The opportunity to refocus has been key for organisations in the current downturn.

Filling the gaps in the order books amidst flattening revenue can only be a short term strategy however. As company investment, particularly approaches to capex and opex, continue to be challenged, there is still concern what the long term future holds for offshore drilling. While this period is obviously a concern for the industry, recent forecasted statistics by McKinsey Energy Insights has shown that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
